'Who' Luck
This concept determines outcomes in ways you don't expect
Good morning!
I was introduced to this concept by Kevin Spacey.
Now before you think that’s a weird flex or name drop, I will point out that this was in 2016 and well before he was effectively cancelled.
‘Who’ Luck is simply this. Who you meet and work with is a huge factor in your life and career and you may not even be aware of it.
Let me demonstrate.
In 1993 I finished school and was unemployed for a bit. I really wanted to work in radio but hadn’t been able to find anyone to take a chance (take a chance, take a chance) on me.
A friend I went to school with (Who Luck #1) suggested I sit the public service admin exam. Her Dad worked in the State Government.
Out of nowhere I received a call from a TAFE College asking me to come and be interviewed. I was confused because I hadn’t applied for a course and didn’t realise it was for an admin cadetship.
I got the job and worked there for a couple of years. One day one of my co-workers told me that her brother worked in a radio station and they were looking for casuals to work on the weekend (Who Luck #2).
I went in for an interview and got the job. So now I was working Monday-Thursday at the TAFE college and Friday-Sunday at the Radio Station.
The Radio Station in question just happened to be the first in what would become a larger network and the CEO was pretty much the biggest name in the industry (Who Luck #3).
From there I enjoyed a 20 year career in radio and most importantly met my now wife (Who Luck #4) who moved from interstate to take a job there.
None of this was by design, it was simply ‘Who’ Luck. The simple concept I heard Kevin Spacey talk about at a conference presentation in 2016.
How did I get to see him speak? Who Luck #5. My new boss agreed to send me to the conference in New York to see him.
Who Luck is all around you. You can’t control it - but you can recognise it and be grateful for.
See you in the morning,
Wade
