The five letter word
Is it time we re-framed the pandemic?
Good morning!
I’m going to say it. It’s been a while but we need to talk about Covid.
We live in the lockdown capital of the world (Melbourne) and spent most of the pandemic behind closed doors. Isolated from the rest of the world, country, suburb and street.
The kids were 10 and 8 then and missed a total of 3 terms at school due to the strict lockdowns.
For the record, I was behind the science. We’re not going to have a debate here on the impact of Covid on mental health and the economy. We all know the two sides to that and Morning Musely is meant to be a daily dose of inspo and not talkback radio.
I raise it this morning because my wife put this on TV yesterday.
It’s Taylor Swift’s film ‘Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions’. It captures her with collaborators making the album remotely during the pandemic.
Instantly it took me back to Covid times. The remoteness and isolation. There are scenes where there is social distancing (remember that?) and people wearing masks.
But mostly it’s showing how life went on. Sure it was different and a lot of it wasn’t pleasant but we did (for the most part) get through it. I don’t offer any disrespect for those who lost loved ones to Covid or for other reasons at that time.
My general point is we found a way.
I know a lot of people are finding economic pressures really tough at the moment. For some it’s redundancies, and for others it’s the impending holiday season with fraught family dynamics and much overdue rest.
So I’m wondering if now that more years have passed we can remember it differently?
It was isolating but we were in it together.
It was hard but we found a way.
It was crippling but weren’t defeated.
Going back and watching things that were filmed during Covid (like the Taylor Swift film) immediately took me back to that time and place.
I had an instant reaction to it.
But it wasn’t all bad.
See you in the morning,
Wade
