So, are you in the right place?
The existential question to be explored
Good morning!
Yesterday I made a pun. Well in fact it wasn’t. It was a literal statement. ‘Are you in the right place?’, which referred to the fact I have two newsletters and I wanted to make sure you had subscribed to the one you were after.
So today is more the pun. It’s an analogy. Oh who cares what it is. It’s just a question I often find myself asking and maybe you do too.
Am I in the right place?
Am I where I’m meant to be?
I think it’s not about being directionless. It’s more about knowing you’re on the road to somewhere.
So here are some core questions to cover off.
Am I doing what makes me happy?
It feels like something that’s easy to say and hard to reconcile. I work to the rule that on balance am I happy? You can’t be happy all the time and sometimes there are moments where you feel like you’re stuck. But if there was a set of scales and on one side it’s happiness and on the other it’s unhappiness - where do you sit?
Am I being compensated financially that I can support myself and those that rely on me?
Money is the root of most issues. Being rich doesn’t take away your problems of course but it sure as hell means you have less to worry about. When it comes to financial direction do you feel like you’re progressing (even slowly) or regressing (even slowly too).
Am I being of value to others?
I may have mentioned this before but this is something I’ve found useful when I feel stuck. It’s easy to focus on your own shit but when you switch the focus to others (spouse, family, friends, colleagues, clients, customers) I can provide an honest self-assessment of where I can do better.
The combination of those three questions is a good chance to take stock. Let’s call it a self-stocktake.
Am I doing what makes me happy?
Am I compensated so that I can support myself and those that rely on me?
Am I being of value to others?
Answer those and you’ll know if you’re in the right place.
See you in the morning,
Wade
