Apologies in advance for the subject line.
I went for a walk this morning. It was bloody hot here so had to get out early. Took Lucky (the cavoodle) who huffed and puffed his way around the oval.
As I was walking I thought about how amazing the human body is.
It really is both a masterpiece of engineering and a marvel of nature. An intricate network of systems working together in harmony, each designed to sustain life, adapt to challenges, and achieve extraordinary feats.
From the tiniest cell to the most complex organ, the body’s ability to perform, heal, and grow is nothing short of miraculous.
When I got home I decided to look up some body related facts.
The brain processes billions of signals every second, enabling us to think, feel, move, and dream. EVERY SECOND!
The heart beats roughly 100,000 times a day, tirelessly pumping blood throughout the body, delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell.
The immune system is constantly monitoring for and neutralising threats like bacteria, viruses, and harmful cells. It remembers past invaders, creating antibodies to prevent future infections. This remarkable memory allows the body to fight off diseases more effectively over time.
One of the most amazing features of the human body is its ability to heal itself. When injured, the body initiates a cascade of events to close wounds, fight infections, and repair damaged tissue. The liver, for instance, can regenerate itself even if up to 75% of it is removed. 75%!
Our bones are not just rigid structures; they are living tissue. They constantly remodel themselves in response to stress, making them stronger when subjected to physical activity. Despite being lightweight, bones are incredibly strong, providing support and protection while serving as a reservoir for essential minerals.
The digestive system breaks down complex molecules into usable forms of energy, ensuring that every bite fuels our cells, powers our movements, and supports our growth.
The human body is made up of trillions of cells, each a tiny powerhouse performing specific functions. Cells communicate with each other, divide to repair damage, and produce the energy we need to live. Stem cells, in particular, hold the potential to become any type of cell, playing a crucial role in development and healing.
The body is astonishingly adaptable. It can endure extreme temperatures, survive in low-oxygen environments, and adjust to significant physical challenges.
I mean… it really is amazing when you think about it.
And all I had to do to think about it was go for a walk.
I watched Peter Dutton`s speech yesterday - being an Englishman from the north-east of England and in prior times a staunch labour supporter. I have never voted other than Labour or Green but this time I am behind Dutton`s conservative party. I am shocked, horrified and saddened at how the extreme left Starmer government is ruining the U.K.
