Good morning!
On Friday I shared the story of how I stay connected with my Daughter (14). You can go back and read that here.
For my nearly-16-year-old Son it’s a different kettle of fish. Obvs.
For finding something in common we have a lot to choose from. Sport (AFL, Cricket), Celebrity (Sports stars mostly), and TV (Slow Horses, Action, Cop Shows).
But we have a brief slither of time available to both of us where our music tastes are remarkably similar.
He introduces me to an indie rock band like Lime Cordiale. I delight him with the Crowded House back catalogue.
I’m not yet old enough to be embarrassing to hang out with at concerts (Tickets already purchased for Ocean Alley & Spacey Jane), and his tastes recognise the OG’s (Fleetwood Mac, The Beatles).
This week we have a slight blip in the shared universe when I’ll make my way to Sydney for Oasis in concert. Didn’t think he was that interested in them but he’s been looking for cheap tickets online. (I think some Dad purchased merch will have to do).
For us music speaks a common language but more importantly it addresses his love language - spending time.
We can go on a Qantas flight together to watch his Kangaroos (losers) or my Bombers (losers too). That takes planning and saving for a once-a-year trip.
Music is just a button press away and I find the more we do that, the more we are connecting.
It’s about spending quality time together, no matter what the soundtrack.
See you in the morning,
Wade
