We’ve just got back from a week in the sunshine.
Sorry if that picture makes you jealous.
Finding connection points with teenagers is always a challenging tightrope to walk. Between the normal weekly routine of work, school, sport and socialising - the peak time to for us to connect is usually over a meal.
Neil Milton is doing some great work with The Table Talk Project - encouraging families to sit and discuss topics together.
In our little family of four our best connection actually happens when we’re away from home.
We’ve snuck away for 2 short breaks this year already. Last week I was in Cairns for a conference and we decided to take the kids out of school to make a trip of it.
Yes there was still screen time (for all of us), and perhaps not as many family walks as we had planned. But we connected, conversed, ate, laughed, and most importantly made memories.
Growing up I valued long weekends and Christmas holidays. These were the times we headed to our family holiday shack on the South Coast of Adelaide.
It was filled with routine but also love. Games of cards or billiards elicited laughter and connection. They were simple yet memorable occassions where we were away as a family. Together.
So back to the present day… we landed back in Melbourne on Saturday afternoon and by the time the tyres hit the tarmac at Tullamarine we were looking at our next trip.
Hopefully we’ll head back to the sunshine to avoid the dreary winter of Melbourne.
No matter where we go or how long we go for, it’s a chance to connect and make more memories.
I’m already looking forward to it.
See you in the morning,
Wade
