Creating core memories
Let me tell you about my weekend
On the weekend I took my teenage kids to a music festival.
This isn’t a lame attempt at seeking cool Dad aura. But hey, if you offer it I’ll take it.
Setting foot on a University Campus for the first time in decades to watch a bunch of acts I’ve never heard of (and a couple I had) gave me a renewed feeling of youthfulness.
The joy of discovering new stuff again! Nothing like literally changing the tune in order to hear something different.
So we sang, we danced, we bought the t-shirts.
Often I travel alone for work. Not working for a big company anymore means I rarely find myself sharing an Uber to the airport with a colleague. Or sharing anything with anyone really.
In the last month I was in London and Latvia.
I walked parks, caught trains, watched movies on flights. All on my own.
I met with colleagues, spoke at conferences. All things I did with other people.
But sharing an experience with someone else does something important.
It creates core memories. Memories that are able to be recalled at any time in the future and evoke an unspoken emotion. Like a knowing smile or a cheeky wink. You unlock the feeling in an instant.
The thing about sharing an experience with others is that it can take you places you don’t get to go on your own.
And that’s a lovely place to be.
